Problem to Solve

The health and safety requirements for this company had changed and it was decided that new policies and actions were required. The company identified that they required a complete overhaul of their health and safety management and workshop procedures. With new equipment and processes being introduced this meant some risk assessments and safe systems of work had become invalid. In addition, two employees had been diagnosed with occupational asthma and the company wanted assistance from competent health and safety professionals to guide them in the right direction for employees and compliance.

Safewell Solution

The customer agreed to a retained contract with Safewell which included an initial audit (umbrella risk assessment) and a fire risk assessment plus a number of days of flexible support. Several risks were identified during the initial audit and an action plan was put into place by the company to tackle the priority recommendations. With the flexible support in Safewell’s retained health and safety package the company could utilise Safewell’s health and safety expertise in a very focused and efficient way. In addition, Safewell gathered evidence on the occupational asthma case and provided a gap analysis of where safety and occupational health improvements should be made. An interesting finding in the investigation was not of shortfalls made by the company but a lack of

hazard information provided in the Safety Data Sheet for a product that was being used. Personal exposure monitoring identified a respiratory sensitizer that may not have been listed correctly on the safety data sheet. This was taken up with the manufacturer with assistance from the HSE.
