Safewell’s Emergency First Aid at Work course is a one-day course. It is suitable for people aged 16+ who might need to provide first aid by responding to a wide range of accidents, injuries and illnesses that they could encounter in their workplace. It is ideal for organisations whose needs assessment has identified a requirement for additional first aid training, such as having employees with a disability or a medical condition. This course also covers treatment for a variety of injuries and medical conditions.

First aid skills acquired

Learners will develop the first aid skills and confidence to help someone who:

is unresponsive and breathing

is unresponsive and not breathing, including CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)

is choking

is bleeding

is suffering from shock

has burns

feels faint

Assessment & Monitoring

The course also includes information on:

assessing a casualty

monitoring a casualty

where to get help

accident recording and reporting

Each learner receives a training pack including resources and ideas to help them practice the skills covered. Depending on the course the pack will have different content specific to the type of course attended. For the First Aid at Work courses, the pack includes a course companion workbook, first aid manual.

Each course meets the requirements outlined in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. The HSE requires a set amount of contact hours that differ for each course. Learners must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment, which is done by continuous observation and questioning during the course.

On successful completion of each first aid course, attendees receive a certificate which is valid for three years.

The number and type of first aiders are determined by the risks in your business. To help, the HSE publish a useful guide in their First at Work INDG214 Guide and Table 2 from this guide is below to help.

The courses run from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm each day (depending on the course), with a lunch break between the morning and afternoon sessions. Refreshments are provided. At our training facility, the courses are delivered in a comfortable classroom setting with a practical area. All courses offer a practical, hands-on approach to first aid that delivers the skills and confidence to use first aid skills in a real-life situation. For added reassurance, each learner is assessed throughout the course using a range of practical demonstrations, question and answer sessions, quizzes and engaging activities designed to coach and support them. To ensure you get the most effective and practical learning experience we limit group size to 12 people.

We can provide lunch for £10/head, if booked in advance, or bring your own lunch; there is a kitchen, cutlery, water boiler and a microwave. A lunch van also visits daily.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Safewell for providing at short notice two excellent 1-day emergency first aid at work courses for our staff. The training was tailored to our special needs school setting with specific reference to relevant scenarios that might arise. We had a mix of experienced and new staff on the courses, and they said that Scott the trainer was engaging, knowledgeable and catered for everyone in the room. They also specifically commented on his ability to give them confidence and put them at ease. Scott included some defib training within the courses which has saved us spending time and money on a separate course. Based on the feedback from my staff I would definitely use Safewell again and recommend it to others.
