Arrange for a
Management Referral
What is a Management Referral?
This type of health assessment is used to advise management on an employee’s health issues in relation to their work and to make recommendations on reasonable adjustments that could be considered to ensure a safe/healthy working environment for that employee.
Management Referrals are carried out by our Occupational Health Advisers (qualified nurses) and all information is confidential.
When is a Management Referral Needed?
An individual may be referred for this type of assessment for a number of reasons, including :
- Long-term sickness absence
- Short-term sickness absence (frequent or sporadic)
- Return to work following surgery
- Ill-health/disability contributing to performance issues
- Ill-health retirement
- Work-related health issues
- Pregnancy-related issues
The employer is asked to complete a form together with the employee in the first instance, after which an appointment is made.
If you are unsure whether a referral is appropriate, please contact us for guidance. In addition, the referral may be discussed with or initiated by your Human Resource (HR) advisers.
Where can Management Referrals be Carried Out?
The appointment takes place with the employee in confidence, either by a phone or Teams call, or face-to-face at our offices or the employee’s place or work (or even home).
What Happens after the Management Referral?
A confidential report is written and – with the employee’s signed consent – is sent to them and their employer. Each report is tailored to the employee and their individual situation. The report will include advice on any medical conditions and the effect on work, symptoms, prognosis and likelihood of recovery, what adjustments could/should be considered, and a suggested time frame.
