There are many types of assessment that fall into the remit of occupational health. The table below outlines the most common and how we can support you.

General Occupational Health Assessment

What is an Occupational Health Assessment

An Occupational Health Assessment is a consultation carried out by our qualified Occupational Health Professionals. The occupational health assessment is used to advise management on an employee’s health issues in relation to their work, and to make recommendations on reasonable adjustments that could be considered to ensure a safe/healthy working environment for that employee.

The term Occupational Health Assessment can cover many of the specialist health assessments listed below. If you are unsure, the best thing to do is call us and we’ll advise you.

Safety Critical Medical

What is a Safety Critical Medical

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 employers have a duty of care to prevent the ill-health of their workers. This is relevant to those employed in safety-critical tasks such as construction, working at height and mobile plant operators. Safety-critical workers (SCW) should not be suffering from medical conditions or undergoing any medical treatment which could lead to a sudden loss of consciousness or incapacity, impairment of awareness, concentration, balance or coordination or significant limitation of mobility. The term “safety critical work” is defined as “Where the ill health of an individual may compromise their ability to undertake a task defined as safety critical, thereby posing a significant risk to the health and safety of others.” (CBH, 2015). Safewell Ltd can offer Safety Critical Medicals as outlined by HSE. The medicals include:

  • A baseline questionnaire to establish current and previous medical history and/or treatment ongoing treatment
  • Blood Pressure checks – Cardiovascular
  • Height, weight and BMT
  • Audiometry -hearing tests
  • Lung Function tests
  • Skin Assessments
  • HAVs assessments (if required)
  • Visual Acuity, colour vision and peripheral vision
  • Muscular-skeletal assessment

The outcome is a ‘Fitness for Work’ certificate issued to the employee and the employer.

Sickness Absence Management

 

Sickness absence management helps with

  • identification of the real causes of the sickness absence so the route cause can be tackled (stress at work, a bad DSE set-up, manual handling issues, etc…)
  • Identify what reasonable adjustments can be made at work to allow the person to return in some capacity. Equality Act
  • Co-ordinating the employee rehabilitation programme
  • Helps the company tackle the absence and get the employee back to work quickly and safely.

Sickness absence management (Management Referrals) appointments are normally carried out by our qualified Occupational Health Advisors. The appointments can be face to face, or over the telephone. A full report will be written following the appointment and sent with the employees consent to the referring manager.

In some circumstances an onward referral to an Occupational Physician maybe required. This can be arranged in your local areas if/when required.

Pregnancy Risk Assessment

If you are notified that an employee is pregnant, breastfeeding or has given birth within the last six months, you should check your workplace risk assessment to see if any new risks have arisen. In many instances a pregnancy risk assessment for the individual will be required. If risks are identified during the pregnancy, in the first six months after birth or while the employee is still breastfeeding, you must take appropriate, sensible action to reduce, remove or control them. Safewell can help you identify any specific risks to the employee and outline actions to help risk and/or eliminate these risks.

Where can should Pregnancy Risk Assessments be Carried Out

Pregnancy risk assessments are best carried out in the employees workplace where the OH professional can establish any workplace risks and hazardous.

Display Screen Equipment and Workstation Assessments

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment or DSE) Regulations aim to protect the health of people who work with DSE.

We can offer this as a computer based self assessment form or one to one workstation / display screen assessments carried out by a trained occupational health professional. In this case the workstation assessments will be carried out at the employee’s workstation. Advice and guidance on working safely with DSE will be issued in a written report.

Advice on GP Fitness Certification

GP Fitness Notes

Safewell’s Occupational Health professional can provide guidance and support on GP Fitness notes. In some circumstances we can help the employee return to work with restrictions, reduced hours and or reduced duties. In this instances the process will follow the same as the Occupational Health Assessment.

Accidents at Work

Our health and safety team can help you investigate accidents and identify root causes (immediate and underlying causes), which will be followed up with a written investigation with recommendations. As part of the investigation it is often beneficial, and some times necessary to refer the injured person for an occupational health assessments.

The reasons for this might include:

  • assistance with counselling following the accident
  • planning a return to work program around their injury and recovery
  • demonstrating care towards the employees welfare and wellbeing

Where can a Post Accident Health Assessments be Carried Out

These can be at your workplace or our offices in Wootton Bassett, and in some circumstances the employees home. This would be in the form of an Occupational Health Assessment or Management Referral; see the relevant tabs or contact us.

Confined Space Medical

The HSE define a confined space as is a place which is substantially enclosed (though not always entirely), and where serious injury can occur from hazardous substances or conditions within the space or nearby (e.g. lack of oxygen).

Our qualified Occupational Health professional can carry out medicals to establish if any pre-existing medical conditions or prescribed medication is likely to have an effect on the person’s ability to work in a confined space. We can also help by recommending control measures or support provision so that you can ensure compliance with HSW Act 1974 and MHSW Regulations.

As with most of our services, these can be at your workplace or our offices in Wootton Bassett. If it’s only a handful of people or individuals then our office works well otherwise it makes sense to arrange at your workplace.

Fork Lift Truck Health Assessments

Forklift Truck Medicals

The HSE “Safety in working with lift trucks” guidance (HSG6)   outline guidance for forklift truck drivers to have forklift truck driver medicals at prescribed intervals. Good practice is to complete a forklift driver medical at the beginning of employment (or at least at commencement of a driving role), at the age of 40 and regularly thereafter.  Anybody over 65 is recommended to complete such a driver medical on an annual basis.

Where can Forklift Truck Medicals be Carried Out

As with most of our services, these can be at your workplace or our offices in Wootton Bassett. If it’s only a handful of people or individuals then our office works well otherwise it makes sense to arrange at your workplace. The medical will consist of

  • Audiogram
  • BP check
  • Urinalysis
  • Height/Weight Check
  • Eye sight check
  • General Health questionnaire, medical history check

Night Worker Health Assessment

Under the Working Time Regulations, night workers must be offered a free health assessment at regular intervals. Safewell can carry out a paper based health questionnaire on an annual bases, and onsite face to face medicals as required. The purpose of a Night Worker Health Assessment is to determine whether an employee is medically fit to undertake night work, or has any underlying conditions that may be affected by the employee working nights.

Work at Height Medicals

The HSE define Work at height as working in any place where, if there were no precautions in place, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury. For example you are working at height if an employee is

  • working on a ladder or a flat roof
  • could fall through a fragile surface
  • could fall into an opening in a floor or a hole in the ground.

To help you comply with Work at Height Regulations (WAHR) Our qualified Occupational Health professional can carry out medicals to establish if any pre-existing medical conditions or prescribed medication is likely to have an effect on the person’s ability to work in a confined space. We can also help by recommending control measures or support provision so that you can ensure compliance with HSW Act 1974 and MHSW Regulations.
