HSE has begun a series of inspections at motor vehicle repair businesses to ensure effective protection measures are in place against isocyanate and weld-fume exposure – leading causes of occupational asthma in the UK.
Why is this happening?
Isocyanates are widely used in paints, coatings, lacquers and finishes – particularly in vehicle body shops where spray painting is common. These chemicals can cause life-changing respiratory illness when inhaled.
What will HSE inspectors be looking for?
Inspections will focus on whether:
Effective engineering controls (such as spray booths and extraction systems) are in place and properly maintained
Safe working procedures are being followed, including the correct use of respiratory protection equipment
Training and information have been provided to ensure staff understand the risks and how to manage them
Businesses found without adequate controls could face enforcement action, including improvement notices or prosecution.
What employers should do
Businesses using paints or coatings containing isocyanates, or where employees are exposed to weld fume, should review their current risk assessments and ensure their control measures are robust and properly implemented. It is also essential to carry out health surveillance – including urinalysis and lung function testing – to identify any early signs of respiratory issues.
