Health Surveillance Audiometry Testing for a Joinery Company based in Wiltshire
Problem to Solve
The joinery company contacted us after a visit from the HSE. The HSE were targeting noise at work and joinery companies (we had a number of joinery companies call us with similar queries). They were falling short on health surveillance for their employees, in particular in relation to noise exposure at work over the 2nd Action level of 85dBA. The joinery contacted Safewell to assist with audiometry health surveillance hearing tests.
We arranged a date for audiometry hearing tests for the team in the workshop but during the conversation we asked them about their management of wood dust. It transpired they all wore respiratory protective equipment (but different models) and no one had been face fit tested on the masks they used. The Safewell H&S team stepped in to advise on suitability of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and based on the wood dust the workshop team were exposed to they advised them on a more suitable mask. When recommending reusable RPE we always recommend a mask that comes in 3 sizes. During the health surveillance medical and face fit testing the workshop teams were fitted with the correct sized mask for their face shape to ensure a good seal and protection. The health surveillance is now arranged annually with diarised reminders from the Safewell admin team.
