From October 2025, the First Aid Quality Partnership (FAQP) has confirmed an update to First Aid training, with catastrophic bleed control – including the use of improvised tourniquets and wound-packing techniques – becoming a standard part of all First Aid at Work (FAW) courses.
By 2026, these techniques will move from ‘recommended’ to mandatory, meaning FAW trainers will need additional accredited training to deliver the new content confidently and safely.
These changes reflect a significant shift in first aid training to better equip businesses for life-threatening bleed scenarios where every second counts.
If your organisation provides FAW training, you’ll need to check that your first aid provision is evolving in line with the new standard. That includes:
Ensuring your first aiders are trained in catastrophic bleed control
Confirming your training provider meets the updated requirements
Reviewing whether your workplace first aid needs risk-assessments should now consider catastrophic bleed risks
These changes support the latest HSE guidance, giving first aiders the tools to act decisively when the stakes are highest. It’s a meaningful step towards better outcomes in emergencies where rapid intervention can save lives.
If you need support, we offer training with an FAW-qualified instructor fully trained in catastrophic bleed control. We can also deliver Catastrophic Bleed Control training as a addition for those who already hold a Level 3 Emergency First Aid or Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification.
We would definitely have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone – you are the most normal down to earth H&S person we have ever come across and we are delighted with your service.
