Straight-Talking, Sensible Advice for Occupational Health & Safety Professionals
Keeping on Top of Sickness Absence: Why Early Support Matters
Recent changes to Statutory Sick Pay have made it more important than ever for managers to actively monitor and manage employee absence. We've seen a noticeable rise in Management Referrals in recent months, reflecting how much employers value early occupational health support in keeping teams healthy and productive.
A Management Referral provides independent professional advice when there are concerns about an employee's health or wellbeing. This may include return-to-work planning after illness or injury, managing long-term or frequent absence, or supporting employees with pregnancy or disability-related health issues.
For employees, referrals offer a fair and confidential assessment, with practical advice on adjustments to help them stay safe and effective at work. For employers, the process delivers clear, objective advice to support informed decisions, safeguard staff wellbeing, and meet legal responsibilities - helping to reduce absence and maintain a healthy workplace.
Building Safety Regulator Goes Independent in 2026
From 27th January 2026, the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) officially becomes a standalone body. It will no longer sit within the HSE and will report directly to the UK Government.
This change, driven by the Building Safety Act 2022 and in line with recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, paves the way for a single construction regulator and strengthens oversight of higher-risk buildings (typically residential, over 18 metres high).
Staying on top of these changes is important for health and safety professionals working with construction, facilities management or dutyholder compliance.
