HSE's consultation on overhauling the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) closed on 30th June. This is moving towards more clarity, broader coverage and faster reporting, underpinned by a more data-driven regulatory approach.

Proposed changes include new construction-specific dangerous occurrence categories and an expanded list of reportable occupational diseases.

At this stage, confirmation is awaited, with implementation not expected before 2027.

HSE Takes Unprecedented Action
Against an Occupational Health Provider

The HSE has issued its first-ever Prohibition Notice against an occupational health service provider after finding that health surveillance was being carried out by inadequately trained, unqualified and unsupervised personnel. The regulator said the failings could have led to serious occupational diseases, including asthma, dermatitis and noise-induced hearing loss, going undetected.

This case serves as an important reminder that employers should ensure their providers are competent, appropriately qualified and able to deliver effective health surveillance that genuinely protects workers' health.
